Which choir are you in? Thursday

When did you join? Easter 2010

What prompted you to join? I had my first baby in January 2010 and was on maternity leave so needed a break from nappies! I wanted to be me again and not just a wife and mummy

Did you have any choir experience? Yes! I sang in my local church choir and also choirs at high school – I went to St. Aidan’s in Harrogate so was really lucky to be in their Chamber Choir which was an awesome experience

What do you remember about your first rehearsal? Not knowing anyone at all. The atmosphere was really welcoming and I felt at ease really quickly. At my second rehearsal I met a lovely lady who was also new and has been one of my best friends ever since

And what about your first concert/event? It was not long after I joined, in the Royal Hall. I was very new and a bit clueless but just went for it and loved every minute!

What’s your favourite thing about being in Rock Up? My friends. I have met people who have become a huge part of my life and I honestly couldn’t be without. We sing together, drink together and even cry together! I wouldn’t be without them

What would you say to anyone thinking about joining this choir? Do it. I’m still here after more than 8 years so it must be pretty special!

Name: Martin Boyle

Age: Old enough to be still working!

Which choir are you in? Thursday

When did you join? January 2016

What prompted you to join?  It was a suggestion by an existing member after impromptu singing at a party!

Did you have any choir experience? No

What do you remember about your first rehearsal?  The friendly people, the humour and Rhiannon’s warm-up routine!

And what about your first concert/event?  Royal Hall, Harrogate in July 2016

What’s your favourite thing about being in Rock Up?  The concert performances – all the preparation and rehearsals complete, choir uniform on, the lights dim, on walks Rhiannon to applause and off we go!  More generally, it’s the teamwork and sense of achievement

What would you say to anyone thinking about joining this choir?  It’s both a challenge and it’s fun.  You don’t have to have previous choir experience to learn and achieve more than you ever imagined you would.  The coaches are high-calibre and excellent teachers, who help you to learn your parts and bring it all together. You will have experiences that are well beyond your expectations, so just do it!

Which choir are you in? Thursday

When did you join? I started choir the second week of it starting 9 years ago

What prompted you to join? I came because a friend of mine had joined and knew I love singing, but I have no music reading ability so choirs had seemed inaccessible before

Did you have any choir experience? Only at school

What do you remember about your first rehearsal? The first night I attended I was amazed at the amount of people there. It was great fun and we sang Hot Hot Hot

And what about your first concert/event?  My first concert was at Ashville and it was a great night. A bit chaotic and we were all very nervous, and we were drinking gin and tonic in the waiting area – a cardinal sin now!

What’s your favourite thing about being in Rock Up? Obviously the singing – even if you are feeling a bit fed up you come out smiling. Also the camaraderie and the laughs

What would you say to anyone thinking about joining this choir?  I would say just to go for it! You will have great experiences and make some wonderful friends. I love it
