Which choir are you in? Wednesday

When did you join? Right at the start (originally with Thursday) then I took a break for a couple of years due to work, rejoining in 2014 with Wednesday Choir

What prompted you to join? I absolutely love all music. I had always wanted to sing in a choir but was nervous about auditions – the informality and opportunity to find your voice at Rock Up & Sing! gave me the confidence to go for it

Did you have any choir experience? Limited to my Junior School choir circa 1976!

What do you remember about your first rehearsal? How friendly and inclusive the choir felt and what fun it was

And what about your first concert/event? The nerves were huge before the first song and I honestly thought I would forget every lyric I had worked so hard to remember. Once I started to sing, miraculously the words were all there and the feeling of joy and pride was immense. I remember not being able to sleep for hours afterwards. I still struggle to ‘come down’ after Wednesday rehearsals and often find myself singing the lyrics of a new piece in my head all night

What’s your favourite thing about being in Rock Up? The sound and harmony we make together when we are ‘on it’ sends shivers down my spine

What would you say to anyone thinking about joining this choir? Come and give it a go –  you have nothing to lose and everything to gain

Name: Jason Baskind

Age: 45

Which choir are you in? Wednesday (and I’ve been in Thursday too!)

When did you join? January 2013

What prompted you to join? I needed a boost, as life was very challenging

What do you remember about your first rehearsal? Being a little overwhelmed, not really knowing where to sit – but then the very warm welcome from the whole choir

And what about your first concert/event? Singing at the Royal Armouries in a competition – we sang Let the River Run and Proud Mary. Then in the ‘We Will Rock You’ concert, the buzz when we sang Bat Out of Hell – I felt like I was suspended in mid-air! On the Budapest trip I remember the incredible reaction from the audiences. I loved singing Come What May at Abbey Road. Also singing with the Canadian choir in Harrogate and then going to the pub with another member playing his guitar and the two choirs singing together there

What’s your favourite thing about being in Rock Up? The incredible bond we have with each other. There are four Rock Up choirs, but we really are one big family. It releases those endorphins every time, without fail!

What would you say to anyone thinking about joining a choir? Forget all those self-doubts about what people will think of you, not being able to sing, not being accepted. For one, singing is a proven natural mood enhancer, and for another you will be made so welcome. For me, it was one of the most inspired decisions I have ever made. Just come along and join us and enjoy the ride. You will not look back

Name: Valerie Arthur

Age: 74!

Which choir are you in: Wednesday

When did you join? I joined on 24th April 2013

What prompted you to join? Another choir member inspired me after she had returned from New York with the choir

Did you have any choir experience? I sang in both junior and senior school choirs, also taking part in Hitchin Music Festivals, similar to the Harrogate one

What do you remember about your first rehearsal? I remember standing at the front to hear the choir sing ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ and having my mind blown away.  It was superb

And what about your first concert/event? The very first event was standing outside Marks and Spencer in Harrogate singing ‘Viva La Vida’!

What’s your favourite thing about being in Rock Up? My favourite thing is that it gets me out of the house doing something I love, singing.  Also, the friendships, and when we get a song right it’s such a buzz

What would you say to anyone thinking about joining this choir? I would say to anyone thinking about joining the choir, just do it (and I’ve said this to a lot people!)
