On 23rd December 2018 Rock Up and Sing! were thrilled to host a magical Christmas one-off musical event at the Harrogate Royal Hall in collaboration with the accomplished harpist Claire Jones, and her husband and composer Chris Marshall.

Claire Jones is an international concert harpist from Wales. She regularly performs with the world’s leading orchestras and collaborates with some of the most celebrated musicians of our age. In 2012 she topped the Classical Charts with ‘Girl with the Golden Harp’. She’s a former Royal Harpist to the Prince of Wales and performed at the Royal Wedding for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Chris Marshall from Wales has performed extensively as a percussionist specialising in World music, has appeared and recorded with many prestigious orchestras, and has performed in numerous productions in London’s West End. He has a flourishing career as a composer and arranger and his work has been played internationally on TV and Radio.

The concert was an opportunity for Chris, Claire and their musicians to perform beautiful well-known pieces such as Ladies in Lavender, Toss the Feathers and Scarborough Fair in the first half of the concert. Rhiannon’s daughter Megan, aged just 17, also accompanied Claire on her harp, and showed what an outstanding accomplished young player she is. Then the second half of the concert saw 100 members of Rock Up and Sing! take to the stage to premier ‘Nativity’, a new arrangement by Chris, followed by some crowd-pleasing Christmas Carols.

The Nativity was certainly a challenge for the Rock Up members to perfect, and as the music was such a departure from the rock music the choir are used to, it took months of hard work and preparation. However, all those who took part certainly loved the experience, and huge thanks must go to Claire and Chris for providing the opportunity of a lifetime!
