In 2012 Welcome to Yorkshire commissioned a project to raise awareness of the traditional Yorkshire folk song Ilkla Moor Bah’t ‘At, and wanted an arrangement for a new, younger and potentially global audience. We were therefore delighted to be invited by Cause UK to get involved in such a unique and exciting opportunity.
X Factor Creative Director, Eliot Kennedy, came to the Rock Up studio in Harrogate and, over the course of the day, 150 choir members were recorded performing his vision for the song. Eliot also shared many stories about his life and work, including his most recent Commonwealth tour with Gary Barlow, recording the Diamond Jubilee Song he and Gary Barlow co-wrote.
About a month later hundreds of Rock Up singers went up onto Ilkley Moor to be filmed in the video to accompany the single and hugely enjoyed the whole experience of being filmed, singing, and throwing their hats in the air! Also included in the project were Brian Blessed who lent his booming voice to rapping, Soprano opera singer Lesley Garrett, Yorkshire singer-songwriter Alistair Griffin, X Factor finalist and former Yorkshire soldier Jonjo Kerr, the Grimethorpe Brass Band, Eliot’s son Jack Kennedy and members of the Yorkshire Regiment.
All proceeds from this project went to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, Yorkshire Regiment Fund and Heroes Children Fund, with the single finally being released on Yorkshire Day on 1st August 2013.
The video is available to watch on the Hear Us page.
