To be invited to take part in a showcase new works by a famous composer is an honour – but when that performance was taking place at the Lincoln Centre, New York the opportunity became even more thrilling!
In April 2013 a group of 38 Rock Up members headed Stateside to take part in a production by Distinguished Concerts International New York (DCINY), who offer opportunities worldwide to perform stunning classical pieces by invitation and audition.
The concert was the premier performance of ‘Calling All Dawns’ written by composer Chistopher Tin, and directed by Jonathan Griffiths, Artistic Director and Principal Conductor at DCINY. The piece covered three movements: day, night and dawn, and consisted of 12 songs each sung in a different language, including Maori, Japanese, Farsi, Swahili, Polish and Hebrew – quite a challenge to learn and to sing with conviction!
After two days of rehearsals at the New York Society of Ethical Culture, the concert took place at the Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Centre to a packed and appreciative audience.
The whole trip was an unforgettable experience for the Rock Up choir members who were not only performing alongside other choir members from around the world, but in the presence of the great Christopher Tin himself!
